Hatha Yoga vs Raja Yoga

Even after practicing Yoga for so many years, I was still unaware of the difference between Hatha Yoga and Raja Yoga in its true sense. And today, I have finally found the answer; so here I share with you all my understanding of it.

Yoga's ultimate purpose is to bring a sense of union, no matter what is it that you are focusing on. To come to this state, you as an individual including your mind and body complex must be in a state of quiescent; so much so that any change in the matter of focus will be noticeable by you. This is the state of Samadhi. Hatha Yoga and Raja Yoga propose two different ways to achieve this state of existence.

In Hatha Yoga, the focus is to bring a control over your energies by practicing physical asanas, pranayamas or both. As you deepen your practice, slowly you start to observe your energies; the patterns of the flow of energy; the sounds it makes and the way it feels while flowing inside of you. With constant practice and discipline, you reach a state where the energies inside the body can be controlled by you.

In the state of Samadhi, you bring the energies inside of you to a stand-still so you can observe any fluctuations being created and also learn the source of these fluctuations. This is when you also start to manifest whatever your mind desires as you can point all the energies towards achieving that, not just the physical energies within your body but the surrounding energies around you.

In Raja Yoga, however the focus is to bring a control over the mind by practicing Pranayama, meditation or both. As you bring discipline into your practice, you start to observe the patterns of your mind; the behaviors you have and the source of those behaviors. This process is called "Swadhyaya" or Self-Study. As you deepen your practice, you develop the skills to not only observe these patterns but also to change them; so you slowly lose your old thought and behavioral patterns and start building new ones.

In the state of Samadhi, you bring the mind to a thoughtless state so it can be fully present in the current moment and change/shape the moment the way it perceives appropriate. You start to manifest whatever your mind desires by shaping and directing not just your own thoughts but surrounding universal thought patterns.

Metaphorical Insight:

Hatha Yoga is like shaping clay with your hands—you mold and refine the body and mind to create something strong and beautiful.

Raja Yoga is like cultivating a garden—you nurture your thoughts and emotions, weeding out negativity to let positivity flourish.

Both paths aim for self-mastery, but they approach it from different angles. WhilHatha Yoga begins with the external body and works inward towards the mind and ultimately reaching the soul, Raja Yoga starts internally from the mind and radiates outward.
